Nippon Paint and Kansai Paint agree to collaborate in handling environmental issues
Nippon Paint Co., Ltd. and Kansai Paint Co., Ltd. (President Tamotsu Shiraiwa; headquarters Osaka, Japan) have recently agreed to establish a joint-venture company to handle the processing and recycling of waste paint and solvents. Both companies will provide equal capital investment in the new company.

As public awareness for preserving ecological balance grows steadily, the need for establishing a recycling-oriented society is becoming increasingly important. The paint industry regularly uses various chemicals for manufacturing processes. As such, paint manufacturers as a whole must actively work toward conservation while making commitment to the environment one of their most essential management objectives. If each company separately deals with environmental issues, however, limitations exist in terms of finance and available resources. To effectively manage these limitations, the two leaders in the paint industry have joined forces with an additional aim to present an exemplary model for 'zero emissions' to the industry.

As a first step, the new company will concentrate on reducing the volume of industrial waste emitted from its production facilities as much as possible. To complement this effort, the company will also promote the recycling of waste paint/solvents generated from paint manufacturing processes. Normally, only 50% of waste solvents are collected with the rest discarded through incineration. Kansai Paint's patented waste paint recycle system makes it possible to collect nearly 100% of solvents remaining in waste paint. In addition, Nippon Paint in cooperation with Professor Yoshikawa from the Tokyo Institute of Technology is now researching the implementation of a micron dust particles-based power generating system. Once accomplished, it will be possible to collect and recycle solid components for use as energy sources and raw materials in paint products. The new company plans to work on achieving 'zero emissions' through the use of these systems.

The main objectives of establishing a separate joint-venture company are as follows:
(1) Continuously developing and improving equipment and systems based on clear cost identification to reduce those costs incurred in promoting environmental activities by combining the two companies' technologies and corporate resources;
(2) Demonstrating the validity of collection, recycling and reuse of resources as a profitable business;
(3) Indicating the serious commitment of Nippon Paint and Kansai Paint by directly investing in a new company to fulfill its responsibility in handling environmental issues, rather than relying on subsidiaries or other companies.
Although initially the scale of the new company's business will be limited, both manufacturers are fully aware of the need to join efforts to effectively cope with environmental issues and as such are determined to make the new business a success.

As leading paint manufacturers, both companies have consistently competed with each other for more than 80 years and will continue to do so even after the establishment of the joint-venture company. As for environmental protection, however, they intend to continue cooperating with each other by integrating technologies and resources to promote resource conservation as well as cost and environmental impact reduction.
