| Nippon Paint develops
a first of its kind -- tetrafluoroethylene coating that dries
at room temperature. |

| Expanding the market for construction-use
fluororesin coating |
|
| Nippon Paint Co., Ltd. has perfected a tetrafluoroethylene
coating that dries at room temperature, a first for fluororesin
coatings for building and construction applications. This product
is scheduled to launch in January 2000 as "Duflon 4F." This
innovative product spearheads Nippon Paint's plan to replace
conventional trifluorochloroethylene coating ("3FCl") with "Duflon
4F" chlorine-free tetrafluoroethylene coating ("4F") that features
excellent durability and greater soil resistance. The company
aims to increase its share of construction-use fluororesin coating
market with this approach. |
|
| Background |
|
| Outstanding durability and superb performance
allow fluororesin coating to be widely used for high-rise buildings
and large-scale public-use structures. Due to the tremendous
difficulties encountered in repair work, such large-scale buildings
and structures require highly durable and soil-resistant paints
and coatings. Improved durability and increased soil resistance
cut maintenance and reduce cleaning costs, resulting in reduced
lifecycle costs for buildings as well as environmental impact.
In cases using conventional fluororesin coating, the inclusion
of chlorine was absolutely necessary to improve dissolving in
solvents. However, chlorine atoms separate when exposed to ultraviolet
rays, which can result in coating quality deterioration. The
most advantageous solution is to remove the chlorine from fluororesin
coating. Faced with this situation, Nippon Paint decided that
chlorine-free tetrafluoroethylene coating would be the best
material to improve the durability and soil resistance of fluororesin
coating as well as minimize environmental impact. Based on this
understanding, the company has been working to develop 4F resins
and coatings that dry at room temperatures in a joint effort
with Daikin Industries, Ltd. |

| Future Activities |
|
| For factory-coating processes that involve baking,
4F coating (Duflon K300) is already available from Nippon Paint.
The newly developed room temperature drying "Duflon 4F" will
lead to a full 4F product line for Nippon Paint, covering both
factory and on-site coatings. The success of its room temperature
drying 4F coating will allow Nippon Paint to concentrate on
4F products for construction-use fluororesin coatings. A rapid
shift in market demand from conventional 3FCl coatings to higher-performance
4F coatings that are less harmful to the environment is projected.
The introduction of "Duflon 4F" will spur this major transition,
and Nippon Paint is aiming at sales of 4 billion yen and a leading
marketshare of over 50% by the end of 2003. Nippon Paint will
also actively promote the necessity of highly durable coatings
that can resist soiling and contribute to environmental preservation
for high-rise buildings and public structures, targeting governmental
agencies, construction companies, building owners and architectural
firms. These efforts are part of Nippon Paint's goal to make
4F coating an international 'de facto' standard for building
and construction-use fluororesin coatings. |

| Duflon 4F Features |
|
| * |
Significantly
enhanced durability
In contrast to conventional 3FCl coatings requiring repair
at 15-20 year intervals, "Duflon 4F" lasts approximately
25-30 years (approx. 1.5 times longer). |
| * |
Higher soil resistance
"Duflon 4F" resists soiling caused by
rain, etc. to a much greater degree than 3FCl coating.
In particular, "Duflon 4F Super Fresh" has been proven
to exhibit the highest level of soil resistance among
all available coatings. |
| * |
Chlorine-free
Unlike 3FCl coating, "Duflon 4F" does not contain chlorine.
|
| * |
Reduced
processes
Thanks to the superb performance even
an extremely thin coating delivers, "Duflon 4F" reduces
the need for a 2-step top coat process to 1. |
